Just after I went to bed last night I heard a strange sound. It was as if someone was pounding a spoon on an upturned saucepan, but softer. More like a tap dripping loudly onto a saucepan in a sink.

The problem with these theories is that I do not have any saucepans. No room for a hob in my tiny kitchen. The sound lasted no more than 15 seconds before fading away.

I had a quick look around the flat, which does not take too long in a one-bedroom flat. There was nothing obvious that could’ve made the noise. So I thought no more of it. Living in a block of flats you get used to hearing strange sounds from your neighbours. Late at night it is easy to mistake the sounds as coming from within your own home.

Early this morning it started again. It woke me. I was sure it was coming from the kitchen, so I got out of bed and went to look. Again the sound faded away before I could find the source.

The fact that the sound was coming from the kitchen could just mean that people on the walkway outside the flats were being rowdy. This sounds loudest in the Kitchen and is often a problem on a Friday or Saturday night, but not normally Sunday.

The acoustics here are weird. Maybe I dreamt it.

    • Hrmm… curious. :)

Maybe it was water pipes in the kitchen area expanding/contracting or something?

We often hear a strange noise in behind our washing machine in our apartment, it’s a whistling/howling kind of noise… and the best we can figure is it’s the water pipes in behind there raising a ruckus when others in the building are using their washers, etc.
